Coal and Diamonds
Exact same content – carbon
Just a different arrangement of the atoms
I could have just been a piece of coal
But you stirred up my smallest particles because you saw my potential
You saw me when I was in the depths – my formation in the womb
“when I was woven together in the depths of the earth”
Because that’s where diamonds are formed
70-120 miles below the earth’s surface
Where the process begins
But there are things that have to happen
Things that cannot be avoided if a diamond is to born
It cannot be rushed
It takes thousands and thousands of years to be produced
It is not an overnight ordeal
Impatience is no friend to this beauty
It is a high maintenance gem, worthy of the wait
It requires large amounts of pressure
Forces put upon it
An intensity to improve and perfect its strength
This force is accompanied by extremely high temperatures
Temperatures that would not be tolerated by other elements
That could destroy a less precious gem
It is the combination of these –
The depth
The time
The pressure
The heat
All of which would seem to harm or kill or destroy
But which together create a beautiful diamond
Whose name in Greek is “adamas” or “unbreakable, untamed’
The strongest of all known things
And whose glorious beauty and radiance is unmatched
Cutting and polishing only add to its clarity, brilliance and worth
Thank you, God, for considering me a diamond in the rough
Worth the time and the process
Help me to see the pressure, the high temperatures, the cutting and polishing
That you bring into my life
As coming from your loving hands
Crafting something of beauty and worth
That will reflect it’s Creator
