It always kills me a little bit when I overhear a conversation where someone is asking a stay-at-home mom what she does, and her response is “nothing”.
Those of us who have spent any of our mother-to-young-kids years at home, know that “nothing” could be further from the truth.
None of the things a stay-at-home mom does will show up on a report, or earn her a bonus or promotion. She will rarely get any of the credit or kudos she deserves.
But just because we can’t “see” what she’s doing doesn’t mean that she’s not busy all day long planning, preparing and taking care of the needs of her children. Her work is REAL even if it’s behind closed doors.
Sometimes we think that God is doing “nothing”. We don’t see our world or circumstances or the people we care about changing. Somehow we imagine that our prayers are going unanswered and that God’s hands are not busily at work in our lives.
Like the stay-at-home mom, He is doing things and working on projects that are behind the scenes. He doesn’t get any credit or accolades for those things still unseen. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t happening.
At the end of the day, a stay-at-home mom might get a thank you for the meal enjoyed that she spent the day working on, but no one considers the work it took to put that meal on the table.
The same is true of God. We might thank Him for the results that are on the table in plain view for us to enjoy, but do we thank Him for all the prep work He is doing to make that happen?
I need to thank Him today for all the work He’s doing “around the house” that I can’t see yet. Because, like that stay-at-home mom, He IS working…
