Brooke Fraser has a line of lyrics in her song, Faithful, that goes like this: “So I whisper soft Your name, let it roll around my tongue…”  I love that.  Such a vivid picture of SAVORING Jesus, in the case of this song, even when the world around us appears to be falling apart and we don’t understand what’s happening. No matter what, we can KNOW that Jesus and everything that He is, is constant and unchanging in our ever-changing circumstances.  That truth alone is so delicious, so thirst-quenching, so satisfying that its flavor should permeate our “taste buds” so that anything that comes our way holds the sweetness of His presence.

As you might remember, on January 1st I chose one word to be “my word” for the rest of the year. That word was SAVOR.  I wanted it to slow me down.  To enjoy moments and not just days.  I wanted it to change my perspective.  To see all circumstances as purposeful.  Something to linger in and not run from.  I wanted SAVOR to draw me closer to my SAVIOR by causing me to lean into Him and to deeply breathe in His essence.

Whether I’m SAVORING my life and its lessons or SAVORING Jesus and who He is, my heart and my mind are transformed.  My thinking changes from panic to peace.  My goals change from selfish to giving.  My mood changes from frustration to trust.  If I know that “all things work together for good” and that Jesus “is the same yesterday, today and forever”, my mindset can’t help but change.

If I can “roll around my tongue” the reality of my circumstances with the truth of Jesus’ name, the flavors combine to offer a new taste in my mouth.  Sweet trumps bitter.  Savory beats sour.  And suddenly, I’m not afraid to take the next bite of life and SAVOR it, too.

I wonder what flavor today holds????

Romans 8:28 – And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

Hebrews 13:8 – Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
