We creative types have often been associated with being a bit insane. We may be a little crazy (okay, we are…) but not insane. Not if you look at Albert Einstein’s definition of insanity:
“Insanity is doing the same thing over an over again and expecting different results.”
Compare that to this quote by Edwin H. Land about creativity:
The essential part of creativity is not being afraid to fail.
Creative people HATE doing the same thing over and over. They would rather try something new and fail than suffer the monotony of sameness. These people are only satisfied when they have stepped outside their own box and risked. That attitude is what has led to great masterpieces in art, writing, music and theater.
What if we expanded that principle to apply to life in general? What if we were not satisfied to do the same thing over and over again, expecting different results? What if we really DID want different results? What would we do to achieve those? Would we take a step beyond our own comfort zones to risk?
We serve a God who never changes. But He is too creative to do things the same over and over. He works in different ways with different people every single day. It makes life exciting. Extremely personal. Full of potential and endless possibilities.
And because we serve a God who never changes, we can risk. He will never leave or forsake us. He will always love us more than we can fathom. He designed our beings for growth and change – our bodies, our minds, our hearts and spirits. They were never meant to be kept hidden and protected in a box of safe isolation.
Look at these quotes about creativity and think of them in terms of life and anything you want to do or change…
“If you hear a voice within you say, ‘You cannot paint,’ then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced” – Vincent Van Gogh
“Have no fear of perfection, you’ll never reach it.” – Salvador Dali
“Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the thinks you can think up if only you try.” – Dr. Seuss
“Around here, however, we don’t look backwards for very long. We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things, because we’re curious…and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” – Walt Disney Company
“Creativity takes courage. ” – Henri Matisse
“Others have seen what is and asked why. I have seen what could be and asked why not.” – Pablo Picasso
“Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life’s coming attractions.” – Albert Einstein
Sound a little crazy? Definitely. But insane? No way!
