My mama taught me how to make up words. Words that have a fun sound and are good at describing things. She often used it to try and win in Scrabble. Brought a smile then, and still brings smiles today when we use words in our family that I know were created by my sweet mama.
So it should come as no surprise that just as I like to change up recipes and decor projects, I also like to play with words. This one has been playing in my head the last few days.
Simplelicity. It’s not much different from the original. But somehow it dances on the tongue and has a musical ring to it. It may become a song at some point.
In fact, that’s how it got stuck inside my brain. I was singing in the car, making up words and tunes and wishing I were a little less busy. Longing for a little simplelicity.
Simple – Having or composed of only one thing, element, or part.
Icity – denoting a quality or condition
Yep. That’s what my heart wants. And it reminds me so vividly of something that Jesus said when He was visiting His friends, Mary and Martha. Martha was running around trying to be a good hostess, trying to DO all the right things for Jesus – cooking, cleaning, busy, busy, busy. She absolutely loved Jesus, but she was distracted by the details of life. Mary, on the other hand, had planted herself right next to Jesus and was just BEING in His presence, listening to His words, enjoying His company. Martha didn’t even know what she was missing. Here’s what Jesus had to say about it:
Luke 10:41-42 – “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one.Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Let’s face it. For most of us, life is just plain busy. Much of it is unavoidable. Some of it can be eliminated and some of it should be. (I’m speaking to myself here 🙂 ) But even in the middle of our crazy lives, our hearts can live a life of simplelicity. That place where we know that really only one thing matters. Jesus. Everything else that we do in this life only has true meaning when He is the love of our lives. Our relationships, our circumstances, our daily routines will ebb and flow and change each day. That’s what can be complicated and complex. But if our souls can rest in the One who NEVER changes, if we, like Mary, sit with Him, walk with Him, listening to His voice things have a much simpler quality. Stress decreases. Simplelicity occurs. We know what really matters and “it will not be taken away from (us)”.
I hope that your day, no matter how busy, has the background music of simplelicity. It’s easy to dance to and there is only one step to learn…and your lead is the perfect Dance Partner.
