Words are cheap
But incur a great cost
When they cut deep
And leave a soul lost
Sticks and stones
Will leave their marks
But straight to the bones
Go careless remarks
How can a phrase
Have the power to kill
To stop someone’s heart
Like a poisonous pill?
Words can imprison
A once carefree soul
A powerful punch
With one mighty blow
But what if my words
That carry such strength
Used that power for good
Went to great lengths
To heal those that hurt
To call to the lost
To comfort the broken
Whose lives have been tossed
What could I say
To set people free
If I had one life sentence
What would it be?
One thing I know
That outlasts the rest
One little phrase
That sums it up best
I’ll say, “I love you”
As often as I can
With words and with actions
To each child, woman, man
That crosses this path
That God made for me
No eloquent phrases
Meant to impress
Just three little words
From the heart in my chest
These words don’t cost much
But they are not cheap
They hold their great value
And meaning so deep
And so “I love you”
Is what I will say
May it be my life sentence
Forever and today
John 15:17 – This is my command: Love each other.
Oh Jana! this is so YOU! Yes, it is your “life sentence” for sure. xo KP
Thank you, lovey! Hugs to you and the five P’s 🙂 xoxo
I love you too!
Ooh that’s good. It’s so strange because it’s like it could have been part of my sermon this past Sunday…almost some exact phrases…but then our voices have always blended well. 🙂
Oh, sweet brother! Well said! Wish I coulda had it done for you! How’s the fam???
Hello, my Word-Girl! If words are your life-sentence, those three make a good prison. You use them so well, now as always. Your poem made me think of a You-Tube video I ran across the other day on the power of words. Here’s the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hzgzim5m7oU
Love, Dad
Thanks, dad 🙂 I will check out the youtube video….Love you so much! xoxo
