“When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, ‘Surely the Lord is in this place and I was not aware of it.’ ” (Genesis 28:16)
How many times has that happened in my life? I was “asleep”, eyes tightly shut to what God was doing all around me. Unaware of His presence or work in my life and the lives of others. I was in the “coma” of belief that my circumstances were random and unintentional and that the goings on of my world were meaningless or trivial. That the joys or struggles were independent happenings, unrelated to more “significant” things in my life.
And yet….
Jesus is continually weaving a tapestry whose threads are interlaced and connected. Each time the needle is inserted into the piece, the color changes a bit. The design becomes more intricate. There is an added depth and beauty. Each stitch relies and rests on the parts of the fabric already woven. And each thread contributes to the dimension. A masterpiece of vivid colors that enhance the bland ones. Rich hues and soft ones. The darkness of black against the brightness of yellow. A picture still incomplete but with promise of great value and beauty. A scene that we know will be lovely, though now we can only see part of it.
I love the verse prior to Jacob’s enlightenment. “I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” That’s God talking to Jacob in a dream. (Genesis 28:15).
God is still working. Needle in hand. Masterpiece in His head. Love in His heart. He’s got a plan. And all of these seemingly loose threads are being tied and woven together. He’s not done yet, but just you watch. He’s up to something beautiful….
Psalm 143:8 – Let me hear of your unfailing love each morning, for I am trusting you. Show me where to walk, for I give myself to you.
