“Are we there yet? Are we there yet?” Remember saying those words on long road trips as a kid? Not enjoying the journey, but just longing to get to the destination. We just wanted to know how much longer until we got to where we were going. We’d get fidgety and agitated the longer we had to sit and wait. And if the place we were going was a surprise, the anticipation only increased our frustration of each mile we had to endure.
There is something comforting about knowing what’s ahead. Sometimes it’s because we are going through a difficult time and we just want to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Sometimes it’s because we have a dream, a goal, and we want to know that it’s going to happen. Sometimes it’s because we want to know that we are on the right path and are headed in the right direction. We want to know what’s out there. What’s in store for us and we can hardly wait to get there….
On the flip side of that coin, there are times when we are afraid to know the future. The struggles or pain that lie ahead. The things that will be beyond our control. The unknown of the future and what it holds can scare us. We only want to know that the outcome will be positive and that everything will be okay.
I can be a worrier. I can get impatient and frustrated when I don’t know what’s ahead of me. Anxious thoughts are always tickling at the back of my brain. But Jesus has been taking me on a journey of trust. Daily trust. Trust that doesn’t need to look quite so far down the road to feel secure and safe. Trust that can enjoy today instead of missing it by worrying about tomorrow.
And here’s the key that He’s giving me to that kind of trust. He’s got it all covered. He’s already on the other side of my future and knows everything it holds. The good, the bad and the ugly. It’s all part of the process and the plan. And He will use every piece of it to direct me to where I’m meant to go. One moment at a time.
Walking with Jesus on a daily basis makes that kind of trust possible. Because it makes me constantly aware of who He is, what He’s capable of and His unmistakable presence in my life. I don’t have to know exactly where the road is leading, because I know who is leading me there each step of the way. The only time I need to be concerned is when I decide to go my own way and navigate things myself. That will always result in me getting lost. And yet, He has a way of even using those detours to direct me back to His hand that is waiting to hold mine to bring me back and walk with me again in the right direction.
The daily path isn’t always easy. Sometimes it’s bumpy and rocky. Sometimes there are twists and turns that we didn’t anticipate. But with Jesus as our tour guide, we can recognize it as the necessary scenery to get to where we’re going. And we can trust the One who loves us and only wants the best for us, one day at a time….
Matthew 6:34 – Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Proverbs 16:9 – In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps.
Jeremiah 29:11 – “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Ephesians 1:13-14 – And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.
