Static – def.: lacking in movement, action, or change, especially in a way viewed as undesirable or uninteresting
It’s not a great thing on the radio or in our clothes. It means that something needs to change, whether it’s the channel or our current fabric softener.
But what happens when our lives become static? When everything stops moving forward because we are resisting change or refusing action?
Just like static in a pair of pants, it begins to cause irritation. That annoying sound and feel of clinging cloth makes us want to change our outfit. When our lives become static we become restless.
We were meant for change because growth requires it.
Jesus begins to move in our hearts through the Holy Spirit by stirring things up in us that desire something more, even if we don’t know exactly what it is. To get us moving, thinking, changing, growing. To help us to reach out to His extended hand to take us further.
What’s the best position to be in to be ready and available to change and growth?
Psalm 1 gives us some perspective on that. Verses 2 and 3 says this ” (The person) whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night, that person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.”
If I take pleasure in God’s words and mull them around in my mind, intermingling them with every other thought that goes through my head, then I am in a position for change and growth. I have the resources I need (streams of water) to nourish new and active life in me. Change and growth allow the natural effect of healthy fruit being produced when the time is right (in season) and the vitality continues (whose leaf does not wither). The continual watering at my roots (planted) is everything I need to flourish (prosper) with the impending changes of “fruit” and “green leaves”.
I love the analogy that God uses in Isaiah 55:11-12 – “As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” His word will not return void. It accomplishes something. It invokes change. It’s in its nature.
For us, it’s an investment toward change that guarantees results.
And what about Hebrews 4:12? It tells us that “the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.” Again, it is active and alive. It promotes change and movement and growth.
Definitely something we want in our artillery.
So let’s lose the static. Let’s change our clothes, change the channel and change our lives. Let’s embrace God’s word, His active, powerful, nourishing, purposeful, life-changing word, and let it affect us. Let’s trust what we say we believe it to be.
