(A little over two years ago, I wrote this for my friend Wanda who had just received her second cancer diagnosis. Little did I know that God had already given her the image of a butterfly during her first diagnosis! She is now about to go on her highest flight with those beautiful wings and see the One who was with her in that cocoon of cancer. Like a butterfly, she has been the epitome of beauty and grace to everyone who knows and loves her. We love you, sweet Wanda. Thank you for showing us the love of Jesus every day of your precious life…)
COCOON
The words still ringing in my ears
Refuse to settle in
My mind can’t fathom why or how
This journey will begin
My world is turning upside down
I’m dizzy from the spin
Things are falling all around
From where they once had been
Questions of the future
Calling out their fears
Questions without answers
Pouring out as tears
And then, there in the chaos
I see a butterfly
Unaware the world is upside down
As he flutters by
And yet, his world is new, too
His cocoon now left behind
A journey in this brand new world
Where at last he now can fly
He came from a place of darkness
To a place of light
Once a simple catepillar
Now beautiful and bright
That cocoon, it held a miracle
Of what would one day be
Until the butterfly emerged
For all the world to see
And as I gazed in wonder
At this miracle so small
I knew that my upside down world
Was no mistake at all
But a precious cocoon, a miracle
Of amazing things to come
I’m held in the darkness by the light
That shines down from the Son
Jesus, make me like the butterfly
Do what You will in me
Bring beauty from this dark cocoon
So You’re all that others see.
2 Corinthians 3:18 – So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord–who is the Spirit–makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.
2 Timothy 4:7-8 – I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith; in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day…
