You know those sweet moments in time when something simple, yet profound, happens that takes your relationship with your spouse, your child, a friend or loved one to a new level of connection? Something happens between the two of you that bonds you because it is shared by just the two of you. A memory is made together. An amazing conversation that leads to better understanding. A shared hobby or passion. A loss that each of you have known.
Something similar or something shared brings two people closer. You have or are experiencing something together that you have in common. It’s a powerful phenomenon in the world of relationships. Connection. It makes up intimacy.
I remember standing in a blank room one day years ago. It was a fresh palette for color and design. I should have been excited, but I was just stuck. Creative juices were for some reason backed up and refused to flow. My frustration with myself and my lack of ideas finally grew to the point where I said, “Okay, Jesus, can you please give me some inspiration for this room?”
As the words were coming out of my mouth, a light bulb flashed in my head in the form of a thought I had never really considered before. God was the Master of creativity. His creation and His mysterious ways of working outside the box were blatantly clear evidence of it. He and I had something in common. We both loved to create. Why hadn’t I realized this before?
I literally giggled out loud at this new ridiculously simple, yet life-changing thought. Jesus and I could do creative projects together! He could inspire me and give me ideas that I couldn’t have thought of on my own! Suddenly, I was part of a two-man team that could work together any time to bring a little more fun and beauty to the world. He removed the mental block I was having and helped me transform a room (and my heart and mind!) that day.
My creative days have never been the same since. We are constantly working on projects and ideas. Because we are on the same team and I have the Master working alongside me, I never have to worry about running out of inspiring ideas. He keeps it fresh and alive.
This was the beginning of a whole new chapter in my journey of intimacy with Jesus.
We were made in God’s image. We share characteristics with Him. Those character traits and personalities that He gave us. They can and should be reflections of His own heart and character. Our talents and God-given passions are talents and passions of His as well. No matter how you are wired, those attributes have a direct correlation to Jesus. God put that ability, that gift, that passionate fire in you to bring people’s attention to Him, the One who made you in His own image.
What do you love to do? What makes your heart sing and your mind whirl with ideas? Where do you think this came from? Who do you think wants to share these experiences with you?
You and Jesus have something in common. Ask Him to join you in the endeavors of your soul. He will bring depth and richness and added meaning to whatever it is. And your bond with Him will take a new step into intimacy. I promise you, you will never ever be the same….
