I have a new crush. He’s tall and muscular and confident. He’s got a great smile and looks good in a white T-shirt.  He’s pretty famous. Maybe you’ve heard of him?  He’s known as Mr. Clean.

MR.-CLEAN

It’s not his rippling muscles that have me swooning or his endearing bald head.  Not even his mischievous grin was what captivated me. (And did you ever realize that he had an earring?)

No.  This man had me at “Magic Eraser”.  It’s his secret weapon to make women weak in the knees and strong against dirt and grime.  If you have never tried it, you are missing out on a whole new world of cleaning walls, doors, moldings and pretty much anything else you can imagine.  Spots you have tried unsuccessfully to remove with other products before, suddenly disappear  effortlessly.  You’ll find yourself actually looking for spots to go and conquer.  It’s invigorating.  It’s – forgive me – MAGIC.

There’s Someone else I know and love even more than Mr. Clean.  He does even greater magic on dirt and grime.  He takes the muck in our hearts and washes it away completely.  Like Mr. Clean, He offers that clean slate to everyone.  Unfortunately, just as I had heard of Magic Erasers but didn’t go out and claim one for myself, people hear about Jesus and His forgiveness, His offer of new life and a fresh, clean start, but don’t grab hold of it themselves.  It’s right there in their reach and somehow they say, “That’s okay.  I’m gonna keep using these “other products” that don’t really do the job.”  What????  What is it about human nature that we would rather stick with something that doesn’t work, try to fill a void with something empty, than fully embrace what has been proven succussful throughout the ages?

I’d heard so many stories from people about the wonder of Magic Erasers.  Somehow I thought, “Oh that’s great for you!”  but never really thought I needed one.  I saw the evidence of how they worked in other people’s homes and lives, but I thought I could do just fine without it.  Until….

Until I realized that I had to get the house ready to put on the market (which, fyi, still hasn’t happened yet).  As clean as I keep my house WITHOUT the Magic Eraser, I just couldn’t get those stubborn little stains off of the doors and walls and moldings that I’d gotten used to looking at.  I finally realized my true need for Mr. Clean’s wondrous miracle worker.  I couldn’t do it on my own.

Jesus is the Magic Eraser of all things grimy in our hearts.  We can try to get rid of the marks with cheap substitutes, but it’s never gonna work.  His work on the cross is all the effort needed to remove stubborn stains.  It’s Magic…

Isaiah 1:18 – “Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the LORD. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.”

Psalm 51:2 – Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.

Psalm 51:7 – Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
