(Baby Sophia lies in a hospital bed in Washington tonight, fighting for her life. Please pray with me for this precious baby girl and her family. The roller coaster they are on is almost unbearable. But Jesus is there…)
She lies there looking helpless
Tubes and wires everywhere
No place is left unprodded
Mom and dad are scared.
She’s faced so many obstacles
Has always faced the fight
Can she battle one more time?
Mom and dad wonder tonight.
But though they’re watching closely
There’s something they can’t see
Inside, Sophia’s smiling
A precious mystery.
Though her eyes are closed now
She can see so clearly
Jesus’ arms around her
Holding her so dearly.
She feels His lips against her head
As He rocks her in His arms
Hums to her a lullaby
Protecting her from harm.
Sweet Sophia, unafraid
Smiles with that impish grin
That says, “I love you, Jesus”
And His heart melts once again.
“Mommy and daddy are tired,” she says
“Can You tell them I’m okay?
That You are right here with me
And they don’t have to be afraid?”
Now inside that tiny room
It was Jesus’ turn to smile
Once again He stared, amazed
At the faith of this sweet child.
“I’ll give them peace, my precious girl
That they can’t comprehend
Peace that defies circumstance
And somehow knows no end.”
And though she didn’t understand
The meaning of those words
She trusted everything He said –
The voice she’d always heard.
This was not the first time
That she and Jesus talked
He’d always held her tiny hand
As on this path they walked.
“Rest now, baby,” Jesus said
And I will be right here
Holding you so very close
You never have to fear.”
Sophia smiled and drifted off
To dreamland sweet and pure
In the arms of her Creator
Arms so strong and sure.
Mom and dad looked on, so tired
But suddenly felt peace
A peace so indescribable
They both began to weep.
Jesus kept His promise
And showed them He was near
That He was holding each of them
There was no need for fear.
And now they, like Sophia, saw
That precious mystery
She was still held in the hands
That caused her life to be.
Psalm 139:13-16 – For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
15 My frame was not hidden from you
that was beautiful, Jana. Thank you for writing it and sharing it with us all.
