Besides the obvious fact that I love piano music and that it always seems to inspire and trigger the creative part of my brain, I couldn’t help but see the correlation between what they guys were doing at the piano and what we’re supposed to be doing in life.
It would be easy to think that the guy who is playing most of the melody of the song has the most important role. But then there’s the guy who is keeping the rhythm. The one who is incorporating the “strings”. The guys who might not be at the “front” of the piano, but who have a vital part on the inside of the piano. They keep the tempo. They add the depth and interest to the piece. They are the music within the music.
You can see on these men’s faces that they are fully enjoying what they are doing so well. Each giving himself fully to his part of the song. They have learned to work together to create something of beauty. They have mastered their timing, their crescendos and decrescendos. They aren’t trying to overpower or outshine each other. Instead, by each of them doing their best at what they do, they are enhancing the abilities of the others. They are literally making beautiful music together.
That’s what God intended for us to do in every day life. God has given each of us the personality and skill and gift set to do what He put us on this earth to do. But He wants us to work together to create a symphonic effect. Acapella solos can be lovely and have their place. But our greatest impact on the world happens when we work in harmony with those that God has placed in our lives.
Some people will be out front, like the guy playing the melody of the song. Some will be behind the scenes creating the interesting details that support and define the melody. And the more we work together towards the same goal (loving God and people with all our hearts) the more we learn each other’s rhythms. The more we use what we have to enhance the giftings of others. And that’s a really beautiful thing.
Romans 12:4-8 – For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.
