I just love Mary.  Jesus’ mother, Mary.  Of course, I love her for her humility and willingness to carry, bear and raise the Son of God, a terrifying and thrilling honor that I can’t even fathom.   I love her for her utter trust in and obedience to the God who entrusted her with such a task.

But today I love her for a different reason.   Or maybe it’s just more of the same reason.

In John chapter 2, Jesus is at a wedding with Mary and His disciples.  During the reception, the host of the party runs out of wine.  Mary comes to Jesus and simply states, “They are out of wine.”  It’s merely a statement of fact.  She knows that Jesus can do something about it.

He answers with a somewhat enigmatic, ““Woman, why do you involve me?” … “My hour has not yet come,” referring to the timing of His ministry, death and resurrection.  Almost as if He’s saying, “Not yet.”

Here’s what I love.  Mary didn’t know what He meant by that, all of the meaning behind it that would later make sense.  But she knew His heart.  She knew that He loved and cared for people.  She had seen that heart all of His life.  And though she may not have known HOW He was was going to solve the problem of no wine, she trusted that He would.  She didn’t ask Him for more clarity in His answer, she just believed that He would do something.

So she turned to the servants helping at the wedding and said, “Do whatever He tells you.”  The perfect example of trust and obey.  And watch for what He’ll do.

Well, He DID do something.  He turned water into wine.  His first public miracle.  And not just run of the mill type wine. He made it the best that the host of the party had seen.  Jesus literally saved the best for last.

I can just picture Mary smiling on the sidelines with the combined thoughts of, “That’s my boy,” and “That’s my God.”  She had made the request and trusted and waited for the answer.   And when that answer came, it was more than she would have even thought to ask.

Thanks, Mary, for a lesson in complete trust.  May I know the same heart you did and wait with the same quiet assurance that help is on the way.

We are singing this song on worship team this weekend.  Another declaration of who Jesus is and why we can believe and trust His answers and His timing…(Isaiah 12:2 – Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The LORD, the LORD, is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation.)
