Just whistle while you work….la la la la la la la…
I try to get my best advice from Disney characters. Snow White gets the credit for this one.
The other day someone informed me that while I was working on an art project, I was absent-mindedly whistling. Since then, friends and family have stopped and teased me for whistling when I am concentrating on something I really enjoy or am intent on. I’m not even aware of it most of the time. Unfortunately for those around me, I am not a very good whistler. (Side note – my maternal grandma could whistle and hum at the same time! )
I’ve also discovered that it is nearly impossible to whistle when you have a bad attitude. It’s almost as if your body and mind won’t let you fake it. Believe me, I’ve tried. Bad attitude in place, I try to pucker my lips and push out a tune. But I get nothing.
So here’s my idea. If I whistle when I’m happy and I can’t when I’m cranky, then when I am heading into a situation or a task that I’m not fond of, before I get crabby about it, I’m going to whistle my pathetic little random tune. I’m hoping it will give me a chance to check my attitude and my intentions and possibly my motives before reacting badly. I’m told that Jesus likes my “joyful noise” and that He inhabits my “praise”. When I invite Him to join me in even the most difficult things, my attitude can’t help but improve. My whistle is my call to Him to give me what I need to do what I need to do and to do it well.
Snow White, I really think you were on to something…(But about that vibrato…)

Colossians 3:23 – Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men…
Psalm 100:1-4 – Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.
