happy birthday, Dewitt!

yep, that's my grandma!

I got the sweetest thing in the mail this past week.  My precious 92 year old grandma sent me an article from her Yakima, Washington paper.  It was about her dear friend and fellow resident, Dewitt, who just celebrated his 100th birthday.  I have heard about Dewitt for several years now and am always amazed by the stories grandma tells.

This “young” man still walks a mile and a half a day.  He sings duets with my grandma for the residents of their assisted living facility and insists that they do it all from memory.  Being a retired preacher, he still gives messages and at Christmas recited the entire Christmas story by heart.

Dewitt has been an angel in my grandma’s life.  They have become close friends, both being widowed and living in a place where not everyone has their spunk, vitality and sharp minds.  They share a love for God that between the two of them has been nearly a 200 year journey.  Each of them has stories of great joy and great loss and a mutual foundation of life-giving faith.  I wish I lived closer so I could see it in person on a regular basis.  But I am thrilled to hear the stories that she tells from time to time of how Jesus still uses their lives in the lives of others.

I love you, grandma.  I treasure that you not only gave me a heritage of feisty and fun, but of a deep and passionate love for God and the desire to share that with others.  Absolutely could not be more proud of or thankful for you.  You have blessed my life from the moment I entered this world.  Thank you for showing me by your daily example that God has a plan for every day of our lives whether we are ten or 100.

Give Dewitt my birthday wishes and heartfelt thanks for being such a dear and sweet friend to my loving grandma…

Let's stay connected!

I promise to send some encouragement your way, and a bit of hope for the soul...
