She is lovely.  Dressed in white, she has never looked more beautiful.  But there is something that prevents her from looking clearly into her groom’s eyes.  Her veil.  And then, with the ceremony complete it is time.  The love of her life lifts her veil, looks into her eyes and passionately kisses her.  The veil has been removed and she is officially his wife.

Though most brides don’t wear traditional veils any more, I was struck by the symbolism this morning when I was reading.  1 Corinthians 3:16 and 18 says, ” Whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away…And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into His likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord…”

Jesus is the only one who can remove the veil that separates us from an intimate relationship with God.  He did that when He died for us on the cross.  Matthew 27:51 tells us that when He died, something very profound and symbolic happened. “And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth shook and the rocks were split.”  A veil was removed between heaven and earth and we were provided access to God Himself.  As if God, as our groom, was lifting the veil to allow us to see His face and embrace us with heaven’s kiss.  The place where an intimate relationship could begin…

If we come to Jesus, our veil has been removed.  We can see Him clearly and enjoy a priceless relationship with Him.  And without a veil, His beautiful reflection should be radiating from us.  If He has looked into our eyes, kissed our souls and has captured our hearts, we can’t help but  mirror that transformation.  And, hopefully, that reflection gets a little clearer each day as His heart becomes more and more our own.
