It was only just a minute
But somehow time flew by
And with it floods of memories
Wash through my mind tonight
Where once the family Christmas tree
Covered packages and toys
Sounds of children’s awe and laughter
Such a warm and happy noise
Paper strewn around the room
Ribbons on the floor
Christmas crumbs left on a plate
Where cookies were before
The Christmas story told by those
Who are just learning to read
Favorite carols sung off key
By kids who take the lead
Singing songs from door to door
To any who will listen
Hot cocoa as we drive by lights
That on the houses glisten
Christmas classics on t.v.
A lovely roaring fire
New pajamas, soft and warm
The music of a choir
Time seems to have disappeared
But the pictures fill my mind
As if it was just yesterday
This other place and time
And though the scenery has changed
And all my babies grown
Toys replaced by gift cards
Still one thing I know
The Christmas story will never change
Christmas songs we’ll always sing
The tree will glitter with its lights
Joy will this season bring
Though kids have turned to grownups
The hearts remain the same
United by the Christmas Gift
That time can’t take away…
