I love the song “It Is Well With My Soul”. I especially love it when my soul doesn’t “feel” well. When life feels big and overwhelming and hard. It’s that reminder to me that God is with me and for that reason alone, all is truly well, regardless of my situation or circumstance.
The word “well” struck me this morning. It signifies a place of rest and health within ourselves. It also is the word for a deep, deep place from which we receive water, refreshment.
Jesus met a woman at a well one time (John Chapter 4). She was coming there to get her daily water for her household. To satisfy her physical needs. But Jesus knew she needed more than that. He knew that she needed spiritual refreshment, living water, as He called it. A well that would never run dry. A source that would never leave her empty or thirsty or wanting. He offered her wellness for her soul at that well. He offered her Himself.
I drink gallons of water a day. It hydrates. It flushes out. It refreshes. That’s what Jesus does for our souls. He brings them to life, hydrating and plumping them up. Cleaning them out. Invigorating them. The water from the deepest source, the well that is Him, supplying for us the deepest wellness that we can experience. It truly is well at the well….No matter what life brings us, because of our Source, we can say, “It Is Well With My Soul”…
