Tonight was our first “Night Cap” evening. A night where about 10 of us (two were gone tonight) get together to talk about the book “Captivating” and share our lives with each other. Many of these women had never met each other before. Sound like a gamble? Probably could be. But having had conversations with nearly all of these women in recent months, I had a feeling it was going to be a good mix. Each of them very different in personality, in history, in vocation, etc. But all having one thing in common – we are all women created by the same God who has a great plan for each of our lives. Our goal is to try and help each other discover that plan by getting to know each other and unveiling our strengths and abilities and how God might use them in our lives and in the lives of others. Good stuff!
We started off with way too many appetizers and desserts (when women get together, we can bring a lot of grub!). That was a great time for casual introductions and the gals getting to know each other. We moved into the family room with our full plates. Everyone had to take off their shoes and get comfy. For some that meant changing into jammies (me) and for some it meant borrowing a pair of sweats after a long day of work. But most of the girls came in comfy casual clothes, serious about having a very relaxing evening.
After eating, I opened with just a few verses relating to us as women and we took turns sharing about what we thought about the book. It lead to personal stories and questions and insights from everyone. These women listened to each other and responded, everyone knowing that their input was valuable and confidential, if need be. It really, truly seemed like each and every one of them felt safe. One of them mentioned that she felt beyond the shadow of a doubt that this group was ordained by God, and everyone agreed. There was just a very natural ebb and flow and chemistry to the evening. And laughter. Lots of laughter.
Each person, when they left, left at least one friend richer, and hopefully greatly encouraged by what they experienced tonight. We are excited to go on this journey of life together and discover the mystery of femaleness – being a woman created intricately and intimately by an amazing God.
I couldn’t help but smile as I was cleaning up. I had prayed for these women for months before we got here, not knowing names or faces, but knowing that God was going to put some incredible women in my life. So far, I had met them in various arenas and they were all separate relationships. Tonight that all changed. My dearest female companions here in Parker got to meet each other. And they like it. And I like that. Thank you, Jesus, for pretty darn wonderful night…and thank you, girls, for enhancing another day in my life…
you’re amazing.
