There have been many times in my life when I wasn’t sure…am I creative or just crazy? I’ve come to the conclusion that I am both.
Those of us who thrive on creativity and random inspiration often feel misunderstood. Some think of us as irresponsible, unpredictable, flighty, impractical dreamers. And we can be. But at our core there is a depth that we long for. A form of expression we crave. A beauty that drives us. A gutteral need for raw and real. A hunger in the innermost place in our souls. And we can’t imagine living without it.
But what does God think about creativity? Does He view it as silly and unnecessary? Is it important to Him?
Yesterday, our creative team got together and had an awesome, honest discussion about the glories and the torments of creativity. All of us have come to understand that the passion that is our great strength can also be our greatest weakness. Billy had us look at Exodus 35:30-35.
“Then Moses said to the Israelites, “See, the Lord has chosen Bezalel…and He has filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts – to make aristic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, to cut and set stones, to work in wood and to engage in all kinds of artistic craftsmanship. And He has given both him and Oholiab… the ability to teach others. He has filled them with skill to do all kinds of work as craftsmen, designers, embroiderers in blue, purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen, and weavers – all of them master craftsmen and designers.”
The Hebrew word for God in these verses is Elohim, or creator. The creator giving the gift of creativity – a spiritual thing! How awesome is that?! This is the same term for God used in Genesis at creation. The author of creativity thought it was important enough to pass on to mankind and allow him to be part of the creative process. I love that!
God shows what He thinks of creativity throughout scripture:
Genesis – Creation shows us God’s amazing artistic flair. So many variations of so many things – different colors, shapes, sizes, textures, temperatures, breeds, sounds, smells, tastes, depths, etc., etc., etc.
Psalms – David was a man after God’s own heart and was a songwriter whose songs God felt were important enough to include in His Word.
Proverbs – that cleverly use verse to impart truth.
Song of Solomon – a beautiful love story full of passion and romance.
The Book of Revelation – full of vivid word pictures and dramatic visions of what God has in store.
So, yeah, I think God digs creativity.
I won’t say I’m not crazy. I think a certain amount of lunacy comes with the deal. But it’s wonderful to love a God who shares my creative heart and celebrates it. We get to create together. Now THAT’S crazy!!!!
interesting
Very insightful. Please keep up your controlled craziness.
