I am hoping with everything in me that the old saying is not true and that you really CAN teach an old dog new tricks.
In my new job, I am the office administrator. Okay, that in itself is frightening. Random, all over the place, easily distracted girl trying to keep the office running and organized. Are you imagining it yet? I know, right? You just can’t help but giggle. It’s an absurd thought! And yet a reality….
We are implementing a new churchwide database. It’s gonna be completely awesome – when I figure it out. It is gonna make my job so much more efficient and will have the capacity to do amazing things. But at the moment it’s feeling like a huge task to someone who is, shall we say, not computer savvy.
On a positive note, I definitely made some mistakes today that I won’t (hopefully) do again. I went in to one of the groups, pulled up one of the participants and sent him an e-mail about connecting to the system. Unfortunately, I neglected one button and 411 people received the e-mail. Before I realized what was happening, people were e-mailing me back, informing me of my mistake. And each of those responses went to the 411 people. Then they began responding to each other, which again went to all 411 of them, etc. etc. You get the picture. When I make a boo boo I like to do it big…The more people who are aware of my deficiencies early on, the better.
My boss was very gracious (good thing he is also my friend) and I think I still have a job. And the crazy thing is, I kind of like the challenge. It is way out of my comfort zone in every way, but that’s when I learn and grow. And dang it – this old dog is determined to learn a trick or two. :-)Preferably BEFORE I do any permanent damage…
I’m dying here, girl! You make me laugh. 🙂
You and I would make a great team–I’ve got the organization and computer part covered. I’m just not so good (read that terrible!) at the people part…
I am really amazed. Today I spent a lot of my spare time trying to find something interesting on this topic. Finally I got to your blog. Thanks for that!
